The aim of the Bachelor's degree programme in Ophthalmic Optics|Optometry is to guarantee an innovative and practice-oriented qualification. The content of the course is based on the ECOO European Diploma in Ophthalmic Optics and Optometry and the Anglo-Saxon B.Sc. in Optometry. During the course of their studies, students will be able to recognise and correct visual disorders and refer pathological abnormalities to specialist practices and clinics. The content of the degree programme is strongly oriented towards medical science as well as technical optics and optometry. Your knowledge is supplemented by scientific and technical principles as well as the basics of business administration. Graduates can set up their own business as optometrists/opticians and are authorised to train apprentices in the optician profession.
The Ophthalmic Optics|Optometry degree programme has numerous contacts with the ophthalmic optics industry and various ophthalmology practices and clinics. Lecturers from these institutions provide our students with a practice-orientated and state-of-the-art education. These contacts with professional practice regularly lead to co-operations regarding bachelor theses, third-party funded projects and employment for our graduates.
In addition to professional skills, social competence and engagement are also supported. In the seventh semester, for example, students work on real patient cases and thus learn about the importance of specific patient care and its impact on the activities of daily life of the people affected. In addition, the students are regularly involved in the optometric care of mentally disabled athletes as part of the Special Olympics and thus come into contact with people who have special needs. As part of a professional team, they learn how to improve the lives of these people and thus contribute to the well-being of our society.
The dual course of study is state of the art and focused clearly on the future. the experience of the English speaking world with the field of optometry in the last years has paved the way for this course of study. A constantly aging population provides an ever increasing need for this dual qualification.
The additional training in the applicable fields of medicine considerably expands the professional opportunities for graduates. Through the application of the most modern methods, beginning abnormalities in a customer's eyes may be recognized and referred to the appropriate medical doctors at the earliest possible stage. The same early diagnosis is possible for those symptoms of hypertension and diabetes which leave their traces in the human eye.
The course of study prepares the graduates to manage their own professional practice or concession in the field as well as opening the possibility of further study as Ophthalmist. Professional opportunities in vision clinics and medical centers specialized in vision as well as in industry, research and development are all open to graduates of this course of study.
The dual course of study provides the opportunity to acquire both the practical training as well as the academic qualifications for professional success in a scientific field. The Bachelor of Ophthalmic/Optometry provides an important link between the Ophthalmic Optics and the field of medical vision care.
